Foundational Training for Recognizing and Responding to Lead and Asbestos Hazards

This introductory or refresher course is designed for professionals who may work in environments where asbestos and/or lead-based paint are present. Participants learn how to recognize potential hazards, understand regulatory requirements, and follow safe work practices to protect themselves and others on-site.

Training covers:

  • The history, uses, and risks of both lead and asbestos
  • Health effects associated with exposure
  • How to identify building materials likely to contain asbestos or lead
  • Regulations governing worker safety and public protection
  • Methods to prevent or minimize exposure during routine activities or maintenance

This course is ideal for maintenance staff, contractors, property managers, facility personnel, custodial teams, and any worker who may encounter these materials as part of their duties.

Upon successful completion of the Lead and Asbestos Awareness course, participants will be able to demonstrate knowledge in the following areas:

Asbestos Awareness

  • Background and historical overview of asbestos use
  • Identification of building materials that may contain asbestos
  • Health effects associated with asbestos exposure
  • Regulations governing asbestos handling, worker safety, and public protection
  • Methods for reducing or preventing asbestos exposure in the workplace

Lead Awareness

  • Historical overview of lead use in the United States
  • Health effects associated with lead exposure
  • Current public health programs designed to protect children from lead hazards
  • Methods for reducing or preventing worker exposure to lead
  • Regulations applicable to contractors and workers when lead hazards may be present
